My neighbor came over tonight and asked me if I could help her rescue a 'parrot' from her neice. Apparently, this bird flew onto their roof this evening, and actually was friendly enough to come down and roost on her neice. I work for a pet supply company, and my boss has experience with most exotic rescues. However, I'm not sure how up she is on IDing exotic birds. This little cutie is quite friendly, and was happy to roost on my shoulder. I've to him/her at my house and will take it to work tomorrow.
Can anyone give me a clue as to what he/she is?
I was guessing some kind of Conure...but I really don't have much of a clue beyond IDing Cockatoos and African Greys....

Sorry I can't help with an ID, but it sure is pretty and tame. You might want to search your local paper to see if there is one listed as lost. It probably got away from someone accidentally since it's so tame. Unless you want to give it a good home that it won't fly away from. ;)

Nanday conure. I used to have one years ago.
yep, just IDed it using Google. What a very nice bird! Currently, it's sleeping on my shoulder, I have no idea what I'm going to do now that I need to go to bed!
Thanks Leanne!

Don't expect it to remain quiet LOL. My Pacino used to get out of his cage every morning, climb up my blankets, and either nibble on my ear, or start screeching until I got up to feed him his breakfast.
Unfortunately, he passed away while I was on a family vacation. I had left him with my sister in law, along with a list of do's and don'ts. The only thing I forgot to put on the list was for her to not use the self clean on her oven.
I got home to her telling me my darling Pacino was dead. I'd love to have another one, but that's not exactly a good idea in an apartment.

oh, that's horrible....
I know that overheating teflon will also kill them....
Well, this bird spent the night on the back of the couch while I slept on the couch. At 615am, it got down, sat on my chest, and started giving me kisses to wake me up lol. I sure hope we can find it a good home, since it's so friendly.

I wish Miranda was older. I love conures but I don't think that a toddler and a parrot would necessarily make a good combo.

There is an exotic bird rescue group in Portland, though. If he's that friendly, I'm sure that someone is missing him very much.

If you have a number for them we can call them. My boss's 14 year old son is taking him home tonight to play with him and give him out of cage time. So far, he's been sleeping and eating all day.
We think he's been missing for quite some time, since a friend of mine said her husband saw an identical bird in their yard 2 weeks ago, about 10 miles west of where he was found last night. I can't imagine too many loose conures around here. If we can't find his owners, we can get him to a wonderful, qualified home with no problem.

The leg bands generally only list the breeder and the hatch date. If the bird was purchased from a private breeder then the breeder might be able to tell them who bought the bird. However, that wouldn't work if the bird was purchased from a pet shop, or if it was a deal between two private parties.

exactly, there is only a code on the leg band. We've got him on an exotic bird rescue 'found' list on the net. We've also contacted the Portland Exotic Bird club, and given them information on him.
So far, we've heard nothing.
Right now, my boss and I are taking turns taking him home at night, and he's with us at the shop today. He met Shelby for the first time today, and now that we are home, he's sitting on her shoulder watching the movie 'Ladyhawke' with her! He seems to have a big preference for females, and absolutely won't have anything to do with my boss's son. However, he did go to her husband for just a couple minutes.

There's a chance you might have a new pet, Holley. ;) Conures are really neato as pets. There are a couple of sub-genuses for conures and if I remember correctly this one belongs to the genus that is generally quieter. The other includes Sun Conures and, well, you know how those can be!

Do you have "Plans B, C, and D" if you can't find the original owners?

Yup, definitely a Nanday conure. I have one for 25 years now. They can be VERY loud. Mine likes to let out an ear ringing screech while my head is near the cage. A real practical joker.

heh! Well, he's really really really taken with Shelby, unfortunately! I think he knows he can boss her around! He sat one her shoulder all evening yesterday, with the exception of taking a bath in the kitchen sink! He will coo in your ear if he's happy, and screech like all hell if he's not. I finally had to put him to 'bed' last night, and once I got him into his cage and covered it, he was quiet as a mouse!
Mark says "NO WAY" to a bird in the house, so Shelby will have alot of convincing to do if she wants to keep him if he's not claimed!

Nice bird. I used to bread those guys. They are very loud but are great pets. Can it fly? If so you should clip its wings so it does not fly away again. You would be suprised how many nice birds fly away from they're owners cuz they don't have clipped wings. I hope you find its owners. they pobly miss the little guy. Not to mention they go for about $500.

It's wings are not clipped, so I'm sure that is how it got away. We still have had no luck in finding the owners, I"m now wondering if maybe someone just let it go. He's got quite the personality, and can be a very naughty turd sometimes! Now that he likes my daughter, he won't let me touch him anymore, and will bite me if I attempt to. He will still fly to me if she's not around, but he's made it clear that I'm not his favorite person anymore. He will have NOTHING to do with any male.

Yeah I have a cockatoo that only likes me and will bite any other members of my family. I also have an amazon parrot that does not like men. Birds are real funny that way.

Well, he got adopted today! By a lady that has a Sun Conure, and another Nanday. I kept checking the online lost and found, and the ad that I put in there, but no response. So, it was a perfect home for the little guy. My daughter cried about it, but I think it's for the best. I"m so glad he's going to someone with conure experience :)
