what do you guys think? my spiddy senses say "to no to"

I figure the oils in the candles may not be the best thing for a tarantulas little booklungs.

Well, but that was from Pregnant wife 2015, maybe Pregnant wife 2016 changed her mind and don't care anymore.

I wouldn't, my room is kept smoke/fume free for protect my T's. I've rescued last year a 0.1 Grammostola pulchripes, she was kept in a sometimes weed smoking enviroment, she's crazy and even high strung i say

Issue about that for me would be that one of my P. Regalis thinks Trump would be a good candidate, whilst my own G. Pulchripes, thinks Sanders is best.

I wouldn't use incense or something else that produces a lot of smoke, but I do use a tart warmer (which is basically a scented candle) within a foot of my enclosures. The Ts actually seem to be attracted to the heat/light, if anything. I wouldn't worry about a scented candle at all, especially if it's on the other side of the room.

The smell comes from feeders and dirty cages. Keep both cleaner. Spiders don't have odors.

Many artificial scents & candles are toxic to humans and cause sinus problems. They could be lethal to tarantulas, who have no resistance to them. I have a tower type air filter in my spider room, that I got from Best Buy. Clean air is infinitely better and healthier than scented air.

Well said. My sister's sense of smell was crazy sensitive when she was preggo. Self preservation is well advised

Iv burned a few in my room before but i personaly only use soy candles, id say a wax burner may be okayish too but its hard telling.. If it stinks its the cages.. i see ur in UT so opening a window isnt an option to shush her up.. Could always claim you put a candle in there and keep her out? XD

Why do you want him to die?

In all seriousness, I have burned incense, candles, Scentsy products, sprayed Febreeze, etc. in the same room as my tarantulas and none are worse for wear. I would be more concerned about a fire resulting from a candle than anything the candle could possibly put into the air.

The alternative to candles and air fresheners and what not is good ol' baking soda. Open a box or two of it in the room. You can also mix up baking soda and water and spray it like Febreeze to neutralize odors (a ratio of one teaspoon baking soda to one cup of hot water, making sure it's dissolved). Point it towards the floor and spray. That's one I wouldn't want to get in any enclosures, but if you're using a spray bottle (vs aerosol) then spraying it below the enclosures should be no issue. You can also add about 1/2 teaspoon of liquid fabric softener if you need it to have a scent. This is the formula I've used as an air freshener for many years now (in lieu of products like Febreeze... cause I'm cheap, mostly ).

Even if the "smell" is still there, the scent of the fabric softener would frankly be enough to trick most people into feeling like the room smells better, even if it doesn't. Cause humans are easily fooled in that way. Just don't lie to the pregnant woman, unless you have your last will & testament drawn up and have left instructions to send all your tarantulas to me

I don't have enough Ts or feeders for it to be a problem, but to me Poec's idea of an air purifying unit sounds pretty good instead of candles or other stuff.

I've got 22 Tarantula's in there. There is a SLIGHT smell, nothing rotten or putrid, i dont keep feeders in there, in fact its the smell of 50lbs of coco-fibre.

Likely i'll just keep a box of baking soda open in there, and get me an air filtration device.

You guys rock! Especially the fellow with the signature about "docile" tarantula's being just tolerant.

I've got 22 Tarantula's in there. There is a SLIGHT smell, nothing rotten or putrid, i dont keep feeders in there, in fact its the smell of 50lbs of coco-fibre.

I use bagged top soil exclusively, which is a natural substrate and doesn't have the smell of cocofiber. It's already broken down, unlike cocofiber which is in the process of breaking down.

Me and my partner recently bought a house and moved in this week. She put a plug in scented device in my "T room/office) I removed it as soon as I realised why the room smelled so sweet

Just referencing the clean air issue,I've been keeping a couple of years now,and moved about 8 months ago. I chain-smoked,yellow walls,etc,within feet of my T's,all day,every day at my old place(BOOO!). I smoke outside(and a LOT less)at the new place,use an air purifier in my T room(T room,arcade,sorta music studio room...yeah,I pretty much live in here,lol).
Afraid of making bold,definitive statements,as I only really have my own experiences to draw from,but there is no question my T's are more active,and I would offer a strong opinion that they(and me,hehe)SEEM much healthier.

While not scientifically proven that such oils/scents won't affect a them, Ts do have chemoreceptors and can sense pheremones as an example. Thus that is a poor suggestion to the OP.

I would not suggest putting in scented ANYTHING into your T room.

If the OPs room smells, it's HIGHLY unlikely from the Ts. If you have feeder insects that's the source of the smell most likely.

This makes sense as Nicotine is a potent killer of insects, and possibly arachnids as well.
