Went looking for Agriope aurantica yesterday, and failed miserably. The area that normally reliably produces specimens was completely absent of them.

Here's what I did find:

1.) Some sort of mystery grub. Can anyone ID?
2.) Same as above different species of mystery grub, looks like it has pincers on the back. Can't really see it on cement background. Can anyone ID?
3.) Really cool looking beetle that I've seen in some of Dark Raptor's posts. It's about the width of a credit card and hunts beneath bark. I have it in a deli cup with a peice of bark. Any idea what I can feed it? I have a mealworm in with it right now, since I figured that it fed upon similar things under bark but it hasn't gone for it yet. I'll just give it some more time. The mites are off it now, I removed them with vaseline.
3.) Scarites subterraneus (tentative ID). Really neat creatures. I have this one in with another male. They were fighting last night, but that seems to have died down since I put food into the container. I will rehouse them tonight.

Expect to see more of these in the coming months. I'm going up to Boone, Iowa on May 28th so hopefuly I will have some more pics to share.

that ground beetle you have is pasimachus(spelling) ssp. a very awesome little tanker, very aggressive eater,it will take mealworms, waxworms, crickets.they need some substrate(semi moist) to dig in,i have one, they are quite longlived also, great find, some are less than an inch, while others are about 2 and a half inches. good luck with yours. i keep many predatory beetles, but these are definitly on my top list:drool:

about 1 to 3 years not bad for alittle tanker:D the fiery searchers can live up to 5years,(they say)but i haven't kept them for that long,i had those for about 3yrs,most likely you would have to raise up the larvas, mine were adults already

Mine don't have the colored band around the elytra. All the pics of scarites species look exactly identical. Is there any way I can tell them apart?
