I have an emperor scorpion and am wondering where I should keep the heating pad on my tank. Rather it should be on the side or the bottom.

Ive had 2 Pandinus imperator colonies with 5 -8 each never used a heat pad. low to mid 70s is good .Mine thrived at room temp (72')

They even Bred at this temp

I would definitely recommend keeping them warmer than room temperature.

In the case of using a heat mat, it should always be on the side!
If on the bottom, the heat likely won't penetrate your substrate so only the bottom itself is heated. If the scorpion wants to burrow down to escape the heat, it could get dangerously hot.

I Respectfully Disagree. My First Colony (5F/3M) Was in a 60" x 24" Enclosure with a Heat Gradient From 85-72. They ALL stayed to the cooler Side. In the Wild They Stay in their Burrows all day avoiding the heat and venture out at night in temps way cooler than "room temp" I have experiance with Pandinus imperator , Heterometrus spinifer , and many others. I had 2 imperator Colonies and both times stopped because I couldn't git rid of the offspring.( My second colony I reduced to 5 (3F/2M) and they still bred immediatly .

Sorry for the late reply. I never got any notifications for some reason. My scorpion also likes to try to climb the glass. Would that burn him by having the heat mat on the side or would he be able to figure out that he shouldn't be right where the mat is?

What heating pad should I use?

Right now I have been using the VIVOSUN heating pad for my emperor scorpion (it's a pretty accurate reader but doesn't always get up to the temperature you program it to get up to.). Do you guys think that is a good heating pad or have any recommendations for other heating pads? I use my heating pad on the bottom of the terrarium however I'm thinking about using it on the side so if you guys could tell me what heating pads you use and where on your terrarium you place your heat pad that would be great thank you.

All scorpions venture out at night due to minimising predation, nothing to do with temperatures.

Also if you bred Emperor's as you stated people would be biting your hand off to purchase the offspring.

Therefore your other statements will be taken with a pinch of salt also.

Notice he wrote it in past tense. Pandinus imperator used to be everywhere.

If you're using a thermostat, it won't burn him.

75F-85F is what I swear by. If it ain't broke never fix it.

Pandinus imperator were usually exported out of Guinea and Togo into the United States which shared both the Guinea savannah and Sudanese savannah ecosystems. Guinea also includes the Guineo-Congolian ecosystem. These ecosystems have an average year round temperature range between 65F-85F with 60F lows and 90F highs. I would rather go mid to higher end of the spectrum to prevent terminal hyperthermia, promote good molts and a healthy scorpion metabolism and digestion (scorpions are ectotherms).

So yes, I have 100% success rate with 75F-85F plus 100% moist substrate (clumpy never drippy) with the depth of 3"-6" depending on the size of the scorpion.

To Explain ; Air Temperature doesn't Affect the Ground (Tons of Earth) the way it does Substrate in a Habitat. ( The Ground will heat/cool more slowly and maintain a cooler temp, substrate in a Habitat will Equalize to the air temp) . Statistics for ground Temps are never considered and aren't readily available. The first few feet of ground are cooler than Air Temp during the Heat of day .So In the wild They are not in the higher Temps. (At least that is My Point/Thinking) To be Clear , I Didn't Breed Them , They just Bred in Captivity on their Own. ( And Yes Past Tense , 1980s , imperators were $5 each and they were Everywhere. I Remember giving away 9 for Free.)
I'm Not Saying room temp is Ideal, Just that's how I did it and they Did Thrive. I have Nothing to Prove So, Yes, Take it with a Grain of Salt.

Thanks for the explanation, as I'm obviously completely unfamiliar with scorpion husbandry.

Heating pads are quite unnecessary. But for scorpions they might come for use when young, but room temperature for juveniles and adults.

Zoo med is one of the more popular brands. Not sure on quality though.

I've used a few different ones on my snakes, I prefer Flukers to reptizoo or zoo met but never used Vivosun. I go with the BN link thermostats

Why when young but not older?

Many scorpions thrive in temperatures warmer than room temperature

I believe that baby scorpions are more vulnerable to temperature changes imo.
