i was at the local pet store, when i came across a cool-looking fish, sold as a "dolphin whale". long story short, i got it now and identified it as a Mormyrus spp., also called an elephant snout fish. anyone else got these neat fish?

i'll have a pic up soon.

They are rather difficult to take care of and keep alive. But good luck :) What other fish do you have?

what specific things can you tell me? i haven't run into any problems so far.

i have a Protopterus annectens that has a very good track record with tankmates.

I had one of those 4 years ago. They are nocturnal and territorial. I used to feed mine at night blood worms every other day.

ok... they have some hard skulls huh?

yeah and bloodworms are key
and soft water. driftwood or peat will help that.

i put in frozen bloodworm and brineshrimp cubes last night, and it's eating them.

this is the setup i'm using. the lights are just on for the picture's ascetics.

I used to have an elephant nose fish (similar sp), and I can tell you that its not good to have any other nocturnal territorial fish in there with it, such as knife fish, or any other fish that use electric impulses to find food. They disrupt each other and fight no mad!

Also be careful of what fish you put with your dolphin fish, as they have delicate skin and can get injured easily by aggressive fish and sharp decorations. I used to have a ghost knife, that was one of my favorite fish.It would eat out of my hand and was always curious about my hand if I put it in the tank.Unfortunately it ate the eyes off the tetras I had in there lol. Also these type of fish can come down with bacterial fungus if the water parameters are not kept healthy. Oh, also its good to put a pvc tube in there for it or one of the clear ghost tubes to shield it from the stray electrical fields from the lights, filter etc.
