So, my room mate actually has had a pair of Dynastes tityus for almost a year now. He found the female a few days after he'd seen it alive and had it's legs and head missing. The head looked a bit chewed out but I was under the impression that Dynastes only eat fruit and sap...and that they're mouth parts were strictly made for such things. I'm I nuts, or is it even possible that he picked away at the female?

We suspect that the male has become a rabid zombie...have quaratined.

I beleive Dynastes mouth parts are only made for eating fruit and sap. Maybe the female had a parasite or already had deremestids or phorids get to it. did you find any ants in the container? I know that as soon as the big beetles dry out they do fall apart pretty easy

maybe the female passed away and the male is a necrophiliac, lol. he probably cant tell shes dead if there's still pheromones around and might have knocked limbs off during the unnatural courtship. Ive made the mistake of handling a female and then a male and trust me, he cant tell the difference between a figure and a female. Sadly for me my female was on deaths door when i found her so I dint get any eggs.

Haha, would you know what I meant if I said that that was a perfect example of rule 34 of the internet?

I'm thinking that you're right though. I dont think that the male could have eaten any part of her. But she degraded really fast.

When they die they fall apart easily. I've had wild caught male Dynastes impale the females' pronotums with their horns.
