Hey guys,

I just got back from a collecting trip in WV (I Live in NY) and I found a male dynastes at a light by a resting station on the highway. Any ideas on what it could be? I was thinking tityus but it's thorax is solid black, not tan like the pictures I found.

If anyone knows what it is and where I could get a female let me know! :)

Thanks :D

if it's in WV, it's Dynastes tityus. Females show up at lights too. I find more females than males. Dang, if you lived close to the collecting site I'd say head back to the light where you collected the male. Bug people online for a female. They usually are gravid when collected and if kept in a gallon container w/ a mixture of top soil and compost manure you should get eggs. And 6 months to a year later you'll have all the Dynastes you want.

If they are humid or freshly eclosed they tend to be dark. If allowed to dry they'll lighten up. Dehydration, however, will shorten lifespan.

awesome find, I currently have a male D. tityus myself and am looking for a female, though were I live in MD the beetles are rather rare to find. Im currently feeding mine water melon, also if u rub his horn (get your minds out of the gutter) he will aggress towards your hand/finger thinking that your a threat or another male trying to fight.

btw WV=west virginia
