Yeah my area, about 50 miles from my house. But thats close, hell the closest major city is 125 miles. It is on the large size for this type of beetle. He looks like he was fighting due to the scratches on his back.

D granti

HEllo All,
Arizona, really nice find.
HE is quite big, if you go out collecting again, you migh find a female or even a bigger granti, 75 mm is a good size I have heard of 77-78 mm.
regards

I got three of these last year hoping to breed them. I didn't have any luck though. I may have had the wrong substrate.
Another thing I did wrong was having only a small dish of maple syrup in there for them. The females would sit in the middle of it and eventually the male got mad and decapitated both females. It was a bit disturbing. So just remember to give them several dishes to eat from or they will go nuts. :p

If you're using wild collected females, there's no need to have a male in there at all. Wild females that have begun to fly have already mated. You only need to provide a suitable substrate for egg laying.

IME, male Dynastes will relentlessly breed females literally to death if allowed to. Again, if the female is wild, no male is needed. If the female was captive reared, take the male out after you've seen them breed a few times. The breeding cage should be large with deep substrate so the female can get away if she needs to.
