I have a male and female dwarf monitor in a 55 gallon tank and they are the best pet monitors. They have all the hunting behavior of a komodo dragon and they max out in size at about 18 inches.
They take crickets right out of my hand, or dive for them in their tank. They are like mini-velociraptors. I also own bearded dragons and leopard geckos, which are two great pet lizard species...but dwarf monitors aka ridgetailed monitors are easily my favorites. They have tons of personality.
The reason I mention this is there are a couple for sale at a great price in the classified. If I had the room, I would buy them in a heart beat. I have no connection to the seller, I just wanted to pass on the information that this species is not your typical monitor that gets too big to make a good pet. They stay small, stay docile to humans, but are ferocious hunters. This species gets my highest recommendation.
