I'm not sure about licenses in the uk But the male is harmless as is juvies of the mactans species.. I've yet to be bit by a black widow fem but I suspect its not all its cut up to be.. only people with a problem are those that will have an allergic reactions IMO

Juvenile female L.mactans are definitely venomous. Once they depart the eggsac they're cocked and loaded. The question lies whether their miniscule fangs can penetrate the dermis of humans and can they inject a potent amount of venom? I don't know the answer to those questions but would not risk no chances.

Their annoying things, but I see the point in them. I'm finalising getting mine in a couple of months but they're difficult to sort out, there are not many insurers who are happy to insure a private collection of scorpions and no insurance=no license :(

As I understand it, L. mactans definitely has a very potent venom that will put ANYONE on their ass. The qualifier of "having and allergic reaction" only differentiates whether or not you will end up DEAD. You know you're dealing with a potent venom when a dose of the antivenin has the slight chance of killing you... (thank you Venom ER).

Give any widow no matter it's size or growth the same measure of respect as an A.australis, the venom is 15x's more potent than a prairie rattlesnake and it has toxins in the neurotoxic venom that are particularly unique amongst the animal kingdom. Severe or advanced Latrodectus envenomation is said to be one of the most agonizing in the world, seek immediate medical attention in case of Widow bite. It affects the muscles as well as it does the neurological system including abdominal muscles, causing an agonizing rigidity (said to be on the level of pain as appendicitus) and severe leg cramps (sports enthusiasts, have you ever failed to properly hydrate yourself?). These are just two diagnosed systematics of many, but don't sweat it, I don't want anyone screaming bloody murder if they see a Widow. They are very shy and docile creatures unless antagonized or forced to bite. Neither do they seek trouble, dwelling in a single web through the whole duration of their natural lifecycle unless it is destroyed or the spider is forced to relocate. Luckily a visit or stay at a hospital will remedy the worst, depending on the severity of the envenomation and perhaps the response time of the victim in seeking medical attention.
