Hey people.

I got my tiny blaptica dubia colony. The reason why i chose dubia out of all the roaches is because they cant climb or fly (and ofcourse that they don't smell).

Well, today I was checking out their enclosure and one of the mature males went up on my hand. I took the hand out and held it in the air studdying the dubia male. Suddenly the bugger took off, flying towards the wall when he suddenly stopped and fell down on my leg.

So, I thought these little ones could NOT fly!? Well, he proved it to be wrong, they can. Atleast fly alittle.

Yup, they fly. Not real far or fast, but they do! A cover is, like Martha Stewart says, "a good thing"

"Falling with grace" (Toy Story) is a more discriptive way to describe how dubias fly. {D

Hey. The reason why I got dubias is to breed them. From what I know they're perfect to breed. No smell, can't jump or crawl on glass/plastic and no flying (though my first post says otherwise, or as it has been said : they fall with grace )

I've read on the net that it takes about 3 months to a dubia to mature and they can produce insane amount of eggs.

i hear they burrow into the substrate when you try to feed them to something, which can be annoying... has anyone experienced this?

Yeah, the do.. it's easily solved with a scissors though. Just clip their legs off before throwing them in and then they can't burrow...

Dubias are great but IME they take more like 5 months to mature when kept in the mid 80's. They certainly haven't lived up to the hype for fast breeding for me. The non- smelling part is a definite bonus.
I'm not a fan of clipping legs and if you have large numbers of inverts to feed it could become very time consuming. Also if you have baby inverts the dubia nymphs will be too big.
If you want insane production and non burrowing perhaps you should consider lateralis. Mine have gone through phases where they smell and other times where they don't. I'm not sure why this is but I think it's partially related to humidity. Even though I keep them dry they started smelling this summer but didn't last winter or now. Another bonus with lateralis is the babies are small enough for my 2nd instar scorps. Even V. spinigerus and Centruriodes can handle them.

I like lateralis. Mine don't stink.
Could you please tell me the specific brand of dog or cat food you use?
When I first got mine they didn't smell but after several months they had a definite stink going on. Now they seem fine. I'm not sure what triggered the stink, whether it's the food or perhaps a bug in their system:confused: .
Fantastic feeder insect either way.

I doubt this is still active, but do you still breed roaches in Canada?
