Here is the first Dove nest I have found this season. This nest is in a bush underneath a pine tree in the backyard. Every dove nest I have ever found, both at home and in the mountains, has incorporated pine needles as the primary if not the only nesting material. Dove have about the crappiest looking nests. Many times they seem to have only a couple dozen needles and that is about it. There is not much shape to the nest. They work though so I guess that is all that matters. This particular nest is better built than most. Mostly it is because this nest is in the nook of a bush that has accumulated many pine needles as a result of being directly underneath the pine tree. There is also another Dove currently nesting in a palm tree in the backyard. I don't believe the second one has laid eggs yet. I have been watching the female in the second nest mating with a male that is hanging out nearby. I will take pictures of that nest this weekend. I'll post follow up photos from egg to fledgling of both nests. Enjoy! By the way, am I the only nerd climbing into trees looking at bird nests? Post some pictures of your backyard bird nests! I want to see them!
