I was watering and feeding my sling shelves today and I realized I had a Brachypelma boehmei that was sold to me as a B. smithi. I love these mistakes. I've had a few of these this year with B. annitha (instead of B. smithi), P. cambridgei (instead of P. irminia), B. boehmei (instead of B. smithi), 2 Haplopelma sp. "electric blue" or whatever they are being called now (instead of H. lividum) and at least one other but I cannot remember what it was off the top of my head. Anyone else have "pleasant surprises" like these lately?

Yes.

I recently acquired Monocentropus balfouri, Grammostola pulchra and P. metallica adult females mistakenly labeled as A. avic, G. rosea, and A. versi, respectively.

Yup. I ordered a B. smithi, B. emilia, and B. albopilosum. Once they started getting their adult colors, the "emilia" turned out to be a smithi too, so now I have a 1.5" 1.1 pair of smithi. :)

Whatever dealer you have is like the Taco Bell of tarantulas.

My Taco Bell screws up for good or bad with our orders. One time we got the lady behind us order (which was like 5 bags of food instead of our 2)

Anyway, good score. Although personally, I like P. irminia over cambridgei but that's just the colors talking. Let's see how that changes when I get the personalities compared.. :D P. pulcher looks awesome.

The nice thing is each one of these mistakes was by a different keeper/breeder/dealer.
The P. irminia were bought by the dozen, so a different species was a nice surprise even though I typically prefer the P. irminia. I've received my share of bad mistakes too. I had a small pink zebra beauty sent to me instead of the 1" Grammostola pulchra (this was back when G. pulchra were as expensive as they are today and the pink zebras were common). I wouldn't be as upset about this today, but that was back then.

All in just this year? I wonder how many mis-identified spiders you've received over your lifetime in the hobby.

Ethical question, you buy a B. smithi, self-identify it as B. annitha, it matures to MM. Do you sell it as B. annitha?

I've had a lot of Ts pass through my hands in the last year.

If I'm positive on the species, then I sell it as such even if I bought it under a different name. I don't think there is a need to continue an error if I catch it. The last thing I want is to have someone mistakenly mix species especially if I know better. Mistakes happen, but it would be unethical in my opinion to purposely sell it under the wrong name. If I was unsure about a species, I'd opt not to breed it. I have the same problem with some of my Australian monitor lizards. With 2 of the species I keep, there are at least 2 described subspecies, but there are probably more. The best we can do in captivity is breed only those that are most similar and hope we don't mess up.

I got a boehmii when I ordered a smithii a couple years ago. Of course I didn't know till it molted into color last year. The trouble is, I really wanted a smithii, NOT a boehmii. But I am out of space and time, so a boehmii is what I've got.

If it's a girl and you still want to have B.smithi instead - pm me and we can work out a trade. I have a dearth of B.smithi slings. (ACTUAL B.smithi slings...{D )

Not an accident, but a great deal nonetheless:

I recently acquired the following Ts, $80 shipped for EVERYTHING.

ADULT FEMALES:
Acanthoscurria geniculata
Poecilotheria regalis
4 Aphonopelma sp. "Carlsbad Green"
3 Aphonopelma sp.

A penultimate male B. auratum

And the following 3-4.5" juvis
2 P. cancerides
P. regalis

and a Carlsbad green sling.
