They will let you get close to them as long as you move really slow. It is no different that sneaking up on any other wild animal
BTW, that's a D. triton, thought if you didn't already know the species you might like to. Really nice pics, what was the size? That's an interesting color morph, a sort of transparent green.
Legspan or body? I seem to recall something about most of them being rather small in that species, but a certain population being especially large. Do you know anything about that? It might be the British species, though, I wasn't paying attention.
i live in southern louisiana about a block away from a nice bayou and swamp area and in the summer i catch the adults quite frequently...in fact because our winters are so mild i tend to find slings year round...they make pretty interesting pets if you can set them up with a half and half water and land vivarium...then you can offer them insects as well as feeder fish and watch the action
