oh, god, i think i'm going to be sick.

long, long story short, my sister had two ill-trained dogs. one was nice and shy while the other was hyper and a little nervy. the first one had surgery last week. not long ago, while both she and i were gone, nicey got loose and killed nervy. my parents did all they could to stop him, but he couldn't be stopped.

he's going to have to be put down so this incident isn't repeated.

I'm sorry to hear this.

Perhaps this will be a great example to others why it's important to train the companions that you live with. While it's a hard decision to make, euthanasia is likely the best solution (as your said) so this does not reoccur. Depending on the reasoning behind the fight, your sister may well have been at risk for becoming injured.

I know it's not an easy situation, but I wish you guys the best. Good luck.

I don't know that I would ever consider killing a housemate an "accident".

from what i was told, the hyper one was out for a walk in the backyard, when the nice one shoved his way out the door and went straight for him.

they had a fight before, also a week ago, but i don't know who started that. since then, extreme measure have been taken to keep them separate, but they were damn set on killing each other.

sadly, she is completely incapable of maintaining a high-maintenance pet like a dog, let alone two. it's almost an act of fate, though a horrifyingly tragic and gruesome one.

both of them were young, maybe a year/a year and a half each.

Actually it can. My roommate's dog busted out of her crate while we were gone and she (50lbs) tried to play my (6lb) partially blind and deaf 16 year old. She just played too rough and he went into shock and subsequently went into kidney failure because of it. It was a complete accident and Layla had never meant to hurt my dog. We had taken precautions to make sure they never were in the same room unsupervised but she's a stubborn one. I still have Layla (because roommate dumped her  ) but I still love that dog despite accidentally causing the demise of the dog I had since I was 5.

If your veterinarian told you that your companion just "went in to kidney failure on the spot and moments later died from it", you were misinformed. It is likely that the smaller dog HAD kidney failure and the STRESS may have caused an upset in his system for him to show outward signs or that he had such an event may have been stressful enough on her already weak system FROM kidney failure that he died...but for him to keel over from kidney problems moments after playtime was initiated without ever previously showing signs or ever having any problems is absolutely not the first dog's fault.

Kidney failure is a normal expectation from an older dog, he's quite lucky to have lived to be 16 years old without showing any previous signs. Many dogs (especially smaller breeds) that generally live to be around 20 start showing signs of kidney problems around the age of 13-14. And kidney's don't actually start showing signs of shutting down until 75% or more of them are effected. So, an automatic sudden effect from stress isn't possible to directly cause kidney failure...but stress may well have had something to do with it.

Either way, a fight and "playtime" are much bigger differences. Medically speaking, a fight truly involves at least one dog aggressively (for whatever reason) attacking the other. I think your situation doesn't qualify as a "fight" because the larger dog was trying, on good terms, to honestly play with the smaller dog. I wouldn't have euthanized in that situation either. It's obvious that she simply did not know her size and an underlying medical condition of a geriatric dog cannot be blamed on her. She was just trying to play.

one of the reasons why we're using euthanasia is that we have two other dogs, one of which is a 15-year-old with bad hips. it's an awful situation, having to put down a 1 1/2 year old puppy, but his behavior is too erratic and he's a killer that shrugged off a metal bat.

If he's aggressive to that point, I would say there is a possibility he could be more than dog aggressive which automatically rules out any adoption. Euthanasia honestly might be best.

Sad things had to happen that way. Sometimes its part of owning pets. We had a collie when I was young we had to put down. She was a great dog but started killing sheep. She would get loose and take off. Show up a day or two later covered in blood. Just never can tell with dogs sometimes.
