Does unsexed really mean unsexed?

From what I have read, when a dealer has 1000s of Ts in his/her possession they really don't have time to go around sexing them. If said dealer comes up upon a T that has molted and the sex is determined (especially if female) they will sell it as such. A good thing to remember is the older a T gets the time between molts is a lot longer, feign frequency is also a factor.

"you can easily tell which have the longer legs and smaller opisthosoma"

That quote right there shows how much the writer knows about sexing spiderlings.

Skeeeeetch.. Hopefully the reputable dealers are above this.
From my experiences, they have been. I can honestly say I've been extremely impressed with the level of professionalism I've experienced with most of the dealers and hobbyists I've had transactions with.

I know over here some 2" are sold sometimes as "unsexed" while they've been actually sexed as males. It's a common practice that some dealers use to get rid of the males they don't need and with a higher price than a possible male. But the reputable dealers don't do anything like that usually, plus, why risk your reputation for a few bucks? Makes no sense to me really...this hobby is a bit about trusting and if you, forgive me, screw up with that, then well...you're a bad addition to the hobby in my opinion.

When you have that many Ts I bet you have tons of time to break out your microscope and strain your eyes to look for a flap that isn't fully developed yet.

Hey guys if I send you a 1/8" C. elegans molt can you sex it for me? it's kinda wrecked. :sarcasm::sarcasm::sarcasm::sarcasm:

I couldn't see any of the reputable dealers doing that simply for a couple of bucks like you said, Storm.

I read that not that long ago over here in a German forum, I'm not talking about US dealers practicing that - just saying that there are apparently SOME few people out there, that do it that way (from a point of business it makes sense - however on the long run, you'll ruin yourself that way) which obviously annoyed buyers and hence them posting about it. I didn't and don't accuse -anyone- of doing that - I want to emphasize the "apparently" in my post - not "certainly".

And yeah, it's probably quite different for you guys over there on the side of the big pond. But if I look at advertisements for very cheap T around the 2-4" mark that go UNSEXED although it's a breeder that doesn't have 1000+ spiders like some over there in the US tend to have, then I'll admit - I get kind of suspicious if those are sold for WAY less than anyone else sells them for...and as reason only "unsexed"...

Always question them, or ask them to sex it for you, if they are selling a 3'' as unsexed. They should be able to sex it. They=anyone selling you a T.

This is not true. If the spider has never molted in the seller's care, they can not give a you a 100% guarantee on the sex.

Not everyone is out to get you. ;)

i would guess most of the time when you are seeing 2-4" spiders going as unsexed and for cheap it is because the person is flipping an import. that is, they are buying the spiders WC for cheap and then selling them off before they have to do much, if any, care for them

you do realize if you ask someone to sex an unsexed for you that you are going to have to pay more for a female, right? plus, epiandrous fusilae sexing really can only confirm males... especially in younger spiders. if you can't see them it doesn't necessarily mean it is a female, it might just mean you can't see the EF's yet

when you have 10k spiders and feed them once a week you really don't have a lot of time to sex spiders out and then sell the males as unsexed. even with the fastest method i have seen for feeding and watering spiders, 10k are going to take roughly 100,000 seconds to take car of... every week. That's 28 hours. And 10s per spider is probably even moderately optimistic as adult spiders can't really be in the same rack setup as the smaller spiders. If each spider takes 15s average to care for you are now up to 42h a week. Factor in recaging when things get dirty or the spider outgrows their current container. Factor in any mating attempts, any special care animals, and any time spent not just caring for the animals and the dealers quickly run out of time to get enough sleep and have any kind of a social life, much less sex out all their spiders and sell males as unsexed
