Do widows double clutch?

I found a widow (L. Mactans, I beleive) today in and old tire pond. She had two egg sacs with her and she was surrounded by hundreds of slings. In with her was a locust that was like ten times her size! This widow is the largest one I have ever found. So I was just wondering about the other egg sack and if it was fertile?

i dotn know if they would have 2 at teh same time cause they would probably just make a bigger egg sac. but they will certainly have more than one egg seac going at once if conditions are right. i have had them have egg sacks in as few as 23 days apart. quite the breeders.

One is probably fairly new and the other is obviously hatched. Probably fertile.

I've heard of as many as 4 egg sacs from a single mating.

i think my personal record is about 13 sacs from a WC gravid L. hesperus, over a period of about 3 years. the first 4-5 she made had hundreds of babies result, the last 2-3 didn't seem to have any viables in them, iirc

in nature i've seem up to three sacs incubating and i had a little lady who lived in a hole in my backyard with two sacs, that she would move to the enterance of the hole to get some sun and move back further when it got too hot. it was really cool to watch her

yes

i got mine in a pasadena back yard huge female...depending on feeding mine produced 6 sacks..5 with eggs 2 hatched out eveywhere in my room....it was bad i didnt introdced her to a male so i thought the sacks wouldnt be fertile!!!my bad...three others hatched about half of the eggs each.and 1 was just a sack....wait that sounds bad..lol soo who knows

Yes

I caught an adult female Black Widow and after feeding her crickets regularly she produced two fat eggsacs...

Found out why! She just gave me an egg sac. That would have been three at one time. What a good mama.
