do crickets breed if not chirping?

i've read that males will chirp to get females attention

however, i have some fair sized crickets and they are not chirping (yet).

i have a container of soil in the tub for them to lay eggs, but i won't pull it out until i know there's some goodies in it

so my question is same as the title - could my crickets be breeding and laying eggs without chirping?!

Look up a cricket care sheet/breeding guide. I don't know about being crickets but I'm sure if you do a little reading, you might be able up find your answer and maybe answer a couple more questions

First off, what species?

I only have experience with Acheta domesticus, and find that females mate only hours after molting to adulthood. The process itself is relatively quick and as such rarely seen. I find the males chirp more depending on temperature. Cricket egg-laying is relatively obvious, and if it's happening you'll probably know. Likewise eggs are easily seen. I use clear Tupperware containers for egg-deposition sites and only remove them once I see a fair amount of eggs in them.

In short? Yes. Having them chirp is probably a better sign though.

Couple things that may or may not be obvious to readers.

You said "fair sized", but only adults will chirp (males) and lay eggs (females). Both are winged as adults. Size is not as good an indicator of readiness as wings are (or chirping).

Females have half inch or so long, dark ovipositors. If you bought adult females from the pet store they likely spent enough "quality time" with males before you got them.
