Hopefully my mom(cricket54) and I will be able to get a better pic of her tomorrow. We are hesitant to bother her much because she has an egg sac and we don't want to stress her out much.

I could be wrong (it's a little fuzzy) but I think I can see a white moustache there. Haplopelma schmidti or whatever the black form are commonly known by nowadays.

Where do you look for the white mustach on the tarantula to tell? She is a very reclusive tarantula, easily frightened, but will not threaten or strike.
It would be very hard to get to look her over for the mustach. We know her egg sack is infertile, but she is guarding it and lovingly turning it around as they do. Only left it once when I put more water in her bowl. Since she has
all that webbing surrounding her, you can't see into her tank, only look down from the top. It is a big octogon aquarium.

Hi Sharon,
The "moustache" (however you choose to spell it where you live ) is found on the outer lateral (to the side/of the side) area of the chelicerae, or fang bases?? Go here

Haplopelma appreciation thread

In the first post Leon shows pics of one of his, don't worry so much about the colours just yet (there are a couple of forms), but have a good look at the second picture posted. You can see the bristles on the outside of the chelicerae well, this is a sure sign of this species. If yours has them, then that is what it is. On the second page of the same thread you will see images of the dark form, worth a look I'm sure.

How do you know the eggsac is infertile?? Has she moulted in your care?? If not, then she may be fertile, now is the time many of the Asians have sacs....

Looks like its a nice lookin t from what i see there cricket and laura .Steve thats a nice lookin spider that selenotypus of yours she'l look awesome after her moult no doubt.I was bitten on the left pointer finger tonight by devil while trying to remove mites i found on her and i must say daaaamn it hurt for a while the pain was burning really really bad for like 45 minutes and my arm was pins and needles to it swelled up straight away but after that the pain began to subside and the pins and needles to now my finger just feels like its been sqashed or banged in the car door and im feeling a fair bit naucious other than that im feelin ok.

You should post your reaction in the bite reports section. I have found that is a wonderful resource when getting a new T in case of a bite, that way many of us know what to expect as far as some of the symptoms.

ps. My mom and I think she may have already moulted in our care since her colors have changed (she used to be the uniform color of milk chocolate). But I am going to try to move her away from her egg sac and get her in to a clear cup where I could see her fangs and such. I'll let you all know what I find out.

Could you please write up as detailed a report as possible??? Dr Raven could really use that in his research. I don't think he has a single bite report from the Selenotypus, so this is kinda cool Do you still have the exuvia from the moult??

Yup no probs steve theres a bite report in the bite reporst section and if you want to know anything else just holla the exuvium got mostly destroyed and was also where the mites seemed to come from she was always mite free before the moult this is strange i have parts of the exvuvium
