Description of Teiidae?

I'm researching this family of lizards and I'm having a challenging time finding info on what all species in this family have in common. I'd like to know if they all have forked tongues, as well as intelligence. Do all have decent intelligence to some degree, or is that limited to the genus Tupinambis only?

Also, for herpers' sake, what species (within the Teiidae family, of course) make great pets in consideration of their attitude, size, (both by space required and the lizard itself) and care, as well as humidity requirements? (anything with low humidity needs would be great!)
