Deli cup smell foul! (Enclosure)

I received two new jumping spider slings (very tiny) and to my shock the deli cups smell… sour? Very similar to spoiled dairy products. I tried wiping it away to get rid of the smell but unfortunately it isn’t working at all! There are no decorations in these deli cups. No visible mold growth, etc.

My breeder said it wasn’t a huge concern and the spiders seem fine. But I wanted more opinions on this.

Thank you :)

A spider is what you bought, and it should be your concern, not the a cup.

It is pretty much norm to rehouse spiders from initial containers to newly set up enclosures.

If OP were to keep the spider in initial deli cup that came with the spider, then I’d recommend to rehouse it.

Bacteria is the primary suspect. Second suspect is outgassing in plastic manufacture. Neither is desirable around your animals.

@remarah1337 Most? plastics? I don't know of any hydrocarbon based plastic that doesn't have toxins in the manufacturing. The problem arises is cutting corners during that process, saving quite a lot of money, and skipping the steps necessary to produce a relatively stable end product.
But it's odd. The acidic odor usually found in plastics is chlorine which has a decidedly different odor.

Yep isn’t it petroleum based? We’re does the bulk of plastics come from ? ..

All 'petroleum', crude oil derivatives, are hydrocarbon based but not all hydrocarbons are petroleum. Plastics are derived from crude oil.

I am using food grade hard plastic which gives little to none off gassing. I wash it out before my spoods even set inside.
And yeah it was a strange sour smell. Honestly since I had fruit flies in another cup and I received the same smell! I think its from the fruit flies’ food they feast on at the bottom. Weird.

I think it is safe to assume that food is now a thriving lab culture and belongs in a petri dish destined for a trip to an autoclave.
