Ok so I left a dead rat pup (that was for my ball python who didn’t eat it) in my Lasiodora parahybana (Brazilian Salmon Pink) enclosure. I couldn’t see exactly what he was doing but the mouse was half way out so what I did see was kind of like the tarantula petting the mouse over and over again with one of his feet. I wish I would have taped it, oh well. But after he stopped doing it I left because from my view of this nothing was happening. so fast forward 2 - 3 hours, the rat pup started to stink badly so I took him out and his neck was basically eating away by the tarantula which also left holes but I couldn’t really see the holes because the blood stained the fur on the rat which was laying sideways covering the holes. I think I'm going to give my Parahybana a small live mouse this week. And give my recently molted (don’t worry it molted 4 days ago so it’s back to normal status) one also and watch them over power it.
So for those who didn’t know tarantulas will take prey that is already dead. But I think they have to be really hungry to do so or maybe they will only eat already dead prey (when I say already dead prey I mean something that wasn’t killed by them) dead furred animals. I've never seen any of my tarantulas eat crickets I have killed for them.
And since we are talking about tarantulas when I say they have to be “really hungry” I use the terms loosely because they can go forever without food lol. So if anyone wants to see what a tarantula will do to a dead mouse just don’t feed him that week and wait two more days drop in a dead mouse near the entrance to the tarantulas hide and leave the tarantula alone then come back hours later. It probably works best at night. Another reason I tried this was because Petco didn’t get their cricket shipment in this week so my babies haven’t eaten in a while.
