It is indeed a Hymenopteran, but those are often called "sawflies" that one in particular may often be referred to as a "horntail". I'm not sure on the specifics such as latin name or family though.

I wish our families lived closer, we'd have so much fun bug hunting. :D

I just bought them two bug vacuums, they were on clearance at sharperimage.com.

Don't those things lay their eggs in wood, or am I thinking of something different?

Many families of sawflies lay eggs in wood, but not all. Many are external plant feeders (look basically like caterpillars) and can be found alone or in groups.

lol...i don't need a bug vacuum, just my cat. I was sitting at my computer around 11PM the other night, gf had gone to bed, all the lights were off except in my computer room. Next thing I know my cat comes running in to the computer room chasing a large tree roach (i HATE roaches)...I had to quietly find a capture cup, snag it, and throw it back outside. Sure ruined my peace and quiet lol.

now...this was the day after I had let her out on the enclosed patio (wood slats around the railing...ground floor) for a while that night. I went to the door and told her to come in...she grabbed something with her mouth and started to trot (happily of course) inside but wouldn't let me see what she had. I kept trying to look but she would turn her head away from me and kept coming...she trotted right to the middle of the living room floor and dropped a good sized tree roach out of her mouth. Naturally it took off running for cover and I took off scrambling for a capture cup lol. Little punk.... :)

Well, in the end be happy it's bringing/playing with roaches and not mice and birds! (They have always been alive too. The bird was looads of fun catching  )

lol...well, when I lived in Alaska my cats (different ones) would bring me baby rabbits and small ptarmigan (silent "p"...type of grouse, lives on the ground...STUPID as can be, can almost catch em by hand) at times...and shrews and voles daily. :p such nice "gifts" to find on the porch...
