As well as working and staying on top of school, I have been doing a bit of work on the basement. I further insulated the "warm" room and I re-arranged a lot of the shelving etc. As a result, I now have a LOT of free space. We're not talking about a little space on a couple shelves, we're talking cubic feet of absolute nothingness. This is, as many of you will know, a dangerous place to be. Do I get more snakes? A turtle? Another monitor? A thousand inverts? For now I am just going to hold off and do a few other things around the house, but I wanted to share with you the excitement and perhaps get a few suggestions as to what your most rewarding animal experience has been.

Cheers,
Dave

strait up my most rewarding has been T's. Most intresting as well. I think the only other thing that would interest me in the same vain is perhaps Salt Water Fish tanks. I cant even begin to explain how much raising them has tought me. I would though I love snakes turtles and monitors .. devote that space to keeping more Tarantulas/trapdoors/mandits/roaches. yeah that about covers it.

Dave,
I think you should get a monitor. I remember how much you loved the one you had to put down.:(
Wouldn't it be cool to get a baby and raise it.

Ernie,

Already did that. His name is Behemoth and he is doing great! 15" back in January -- 25" now. :) He is still a bit squirmy sometimes when he is taken off the ground, but he is quite comfortable being petted in his own enclosure -- speaking of which, here is a picture.

Cheers,
Dave

Dave, that's a great looking cage.. who makes it?

Oh, and isn't it time you got yourself something in the genus Theraphosa?

Bill,

I have a T.blondi that was given to me by a friend because she creeped him out. :) Still a little'un, though. :)

As for the enclosure, I made it. And no, Ed, it isn't a converted deli case. The whole thing is basically framed in 2x4s and comes in three bits. The top bit has the hardware cloth top with 2x4 "fins" on top to support things. There is a lighting box in the back right-hand corner that allows access to the lights from above and behind but not from within the enclosure. The two doors are just pieces of glass I bought and framed in 1x2s.

The bit on the right-hand side of the bottom is the dirt box. It is OSB with two plywood boards that Behemoth can hide under or bask on. Inside is a plastic lining, two inches of gravel for water drainage and a mixture of potting soil, peat moss and mulch. There are also two ramps made of plexiglass and plastic mesh and that big branch you can see.

The bit on the left is the pond which is just two 40-gallon tupperwares framed up in 2x4s to prevent bowing. There is a pump housing with a course mesh to prevent big stuff from getting in. The pump itself is rated at 800gph and pumps the water into the trickle filter, which can be seen on top. The return is through a 3" PVC pipe. There is a pexi and mesh ramp out of the water. There are also some fish in there. Next step is lighting it up so I can support some water plants to suck up some of the excess nutrients.

Cheers,
Dave

You should get a sugar glider ( just build the cage over one entire wall and get a pair of em even ;) ) and a couple bearded dragons.... and maybe a pair of burms :D. That'll take up the whole room. OOOOOR.... if you're just gonna make em T shelves make one whole wall an avic wall so that when you look over at the shelves you have a whole bunch of little guys clung to the sides of their enclosures. That'd be pretty!!

Dave...how about some bearded dragons or JCPs?

Who says snakes are illiterate?

Bry,

Tamara has a JCP and whether or not she gets him a mate is basically her department. I definitely do intend to pair up all my snakes, though.

As for the beardies, they are a major consideration. I may, however, try to get a different type of medium sized lizard that is bred less often. Even something like a BTS is better, though I might try something like prehensiles or the like.

BTS's are certainly neat lizards.

I always wanted a JCP, but the petstore doesn't want anything to do with them, he claims they're vicious snakes.

Dunno if that's true or not, I haven't done any research since I probably won't get one for quite some time.

if you want something a bit different than beardies try frilled dragons, they get to an impressive size and are much less common than beardies. hatchlings and small juvs sell for around 200.00 U.S. or so. prehinsiles are not that common anymore since they cannot be exported. I had two adults at one time.

This is true, although in the last week or two I have seen them on more than one reptile wholesalers list. Are they being imported again?

I'm going to start a new thread on this specific topic.
