I had a couple of empty 10 gal tanks laying around and was wondering what to do with em...decided to rip em apart and make a 20 gal square tank for my two ribbion snakes that were shareing one 10 gal. I know I could have just plunked em into a standard 20 gal but where is the fun in that. It was a lot more fun busting glass and glueing stuff together. I used some marine grade epoxy and aquarium silicon for the constuction and reused all of the removed black plastic parts so all of the trim would be the same. I incorperated a heat rock for warmth and a 6x8x3 inch pool for the feeder fish. The top is 2 regular locking screen tops for 10 gal tanks one of which has a sliding door for minor access. Both tops are removeable for major work. Included here is a bunch of pics of both the construction and some of the finished tank with the happy new residents. Hope you all enjoy.

yup. that is a comet goldfish they eat those or what is called a rosie red. They will eat about 2 bucks worth of comets a week or about 5-6 bucks worth of the other because they are so small. Comets are a better and more economical choice.

I know this thread's been dormant a few weeks... but there were a few things I was curious about. First, you have inspired me, I often wonder "what *am* I going to do with those 10s."

Next, ribbon vs garter? Just a matter of semantics?

And lastly, I read somewhere that goldfish and rosies can be toxic to garters so have been hesitant about feeding them. Also read that they can be enticed to eat pinkie mice???

Anyway, any suggestions or comments are welcome :)

Thank goodness for my pythons and boas that I am less ignorant about them than I am these garters/ribbons LOL

Ribbions and garters are related but no they are not the same thing
These snakes have been feeding on rosies or the comets for thier entire life if they were poisionous I am sure the results would have shown up by now. as far as feeding them anything else we favor the fish since they tend to swallow them while still over the water and this keeps them away from the substrate. We have seen them regurgitate a wood chip on occasion to clear there system but we try to avoid giveing anything from the ground for them to eat.
These snakes tend to be much less smelly than any garter snake I have seen and can be very personable with thier own set of traits and habits to learn and set apart from another of the species.
And thank you for letting me know my project has gotten you thinking, I am wondering what you will come up with.

Heh.. the smelliness of the garter is why she lives in my sons room. He seems to be immune. Glad to hear that you haven't had any problems with the rosies etc. Thanks for the species clarification. Just recently offered "medusa" pinkies and she gobbles them up like they're going out of style. She takes them from tongs, and keeps her head up while eating so we are avoiding the nasty ingestion of bedding complications :) As far as my ten gallong brainstorming goes... well, the 10's ended up being put back into use, so I guess someone else will have to outgrow them before they are transformed.

*ACK* Is that a HEAT ROCK I see in the tank? Please tell me you cut the cord and only use it for decoration!!

Also....I hope you don't feed the Ribbons only fish. They can develop nutritional deficiencies if not fed a varied diet of fish (preferably feeder guppies, as goldfish are terribly un-healthy in large amounts), invertebrates such as worms, and the occasional rodent. They are a diurnal species that would probably benefit from UV lighting as well.
