Hello America,
I am in Canada on the west coast and I am wondering if there are any tarantula dealers/stores in the Seattle area that I could check out while on a trip with the family. Apparently you can bring a couple Ts over the border without permits etc.
Any info?
Thanks!

I don't think thats true... I would look into export inspections with Fisheries and Wildlife.

Let us know if that is indeed the case.

Where did you hear this?

in the Canadian forum there was a thread in which an American member who lives just over the border near Montreal was discussing visiting tarantulacanada and it came up. If i am correct it was stated that 7 Ts can be brought over the border without paperwork...Im really hoping this is true.
And I cant find the post as of yet.

There is a Reptile zoo that has some tarantulas on disply in Monroe off I-5 and hwy 2.
I was there a few Sundays back, they have an L. parahybana ~10" and 4 or 5 other T's there.
I'm not aware of any dealers/stores that will allow you to "check out" any Tarantulas. There might be some typical pet stores that have a few in stock but I don't know of any right off hand. ;)

By "check out" I think the OP is talking about looking at stores that have stock for sale, not "checking out" tarantulas like books lol

Unfortunately, I am not aware of any in the Seattle area... and I am interested in hearing what Ts can be brought over the border without permits!

You should probably call the border crossing you will be going to specifically to see what they know regardless of what the laws are. You don't really want the guys running the border taking your T's and setting them where ever they want while they spend hours checking what is legal. If you do find out its legal, but the guys at the crossing don't know much about it you should get a print out, or a number of where they can find the law quickly.

Dang, I drive by this about twice a year when I pick my little bro up to visit. I always thought it was some cheez ball zoo with nothing worthwhile to check out. Next time I drive up hwy2 I'll have to check it out, thanks for the tip

I am ignorant of Canada/US import/export law, so I am uncertain if you can legally take tarantulas across the border. That said, you might contact Adam Hundt (TarantulaCages.com) and see if he'd be available during your visit. Adam is a great guy, and you can go to his website to see what types of T's he has. He's not far from King County International Airport. (Boeing Field)

I looked it up some time ago but it's somewhere in these pages.
http://www.fws.gov/le/ImpExp/Info_Importers_Exporters.htm

I think you're going to find that any animal leaving the USA is subject to inspection. Whether or not you declare it is up to you.

The fact of the matter is, unless the species is on the CITES list I believe there is no issue with exporting. Lets say you have a B. smithi, which is on CITES, unless somehow you can prove it's captive bred in the USA it won't be leaving the country.

If you do plan on doing some exporting, make sure you go through the border at a major crossing, which should have someone from Fisheries available. Your inspection will probably cost $100 so be prepared and make it worth your while.

Prepare all the documents ahead of time, be able to prove you have the actual species you are importing, etc....

The Canadian side has no limitations on Arachnids.

Thanks for the replies everyone and forrestpengra particularily.
I would never dream of bringing anything over the border without proper permits etc... I was just hoping that what I read had some validity. The wife and daughter bring back some clothes and shoes...I bring back a T. lol
Thanks again

I totally get it... I'm an American living in Canada, and there is a lot of stuff I would like to bring over but it can be a bit of a hassle.
