How is the Cuban gold/bronze in terms of temperament? I’m asking as I’m a beginner who wants a large tarantula but not one that will eat me.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Phormictopus genus are not recommended for beginners due to their adult size, boldness and defensiveness. If you never owned and cared for any invertebrate or herp that can move and strike at lightning speed then I don't advise starting off with any Phormictopus species.

1st no tarantula will eat you

Do you currently have any tarantulas or inverts?

How long have you had it? Have you done many rehouses? And have you had any problems or negative experiences so far?
I had it for just a week. I only moved into into its home after I took it out the box but it was fine and was rather slow and didn’t show signs of aggression.

And other than the juvenile L. parahybana that I got that’s not buried itself, I haven’t had any issues yet.

I’d keep your LP and gain more experience with it first. A week is nothing

I would wait on the Phormichtopus (my 17th). I’ve only had mine for 9 months and I tell ya, that little bugger is bold. Reading up on different T’s and making your wishlist is a great place to start. There are lots of recommended beginner species threads that go over some really great ones. I would be remiss if I didn't suggest researching an Acanthoscurria geniculata for your future wishlist.

When you say ‘bold’, what do you mean exactly?

They are split personally t's one minute they can be chill just stood there not bothered by you or anything your doing next they are across the viv in a threat pose. Everything that enters the viv is food and they will throw hairs for you breathing in their vicinity.
Your better off getting used to your new t before you consider phormictopus. Maybe try an Acanthoscurria geniculata in a month or 2 they are pretty and a little less grumpy then phormictopus a much better choice for someone starting out 😊.

Mine is still young, so not yet as forward as @Charliemum’s, but even as a sling, and now juvie, she does not back down and will run over to investigate anything going on. As a sling, I attempted to get a picture of her when she had her mouth full as the condiment cup had a milky top. I got one shot as she tried to take that cricket to go within the two seconds I took to focus my phone on her. She has gained a full inch in that 9 months and is in heavy premolt now. This will be her third housing as I expect her to put on another 1/3 - 1/2”. If you haven’t done a lot of rehousings, that’s a really short time to get good at it with a T that will stand her ground, flick hairs and is fast.

My Phormics are the most defensive T's I own. I had to rehouse 1 in a tall bin because they charge the lid. Granted, it's the most defensive from the genus.

I would recommend an A geniculata. They have everything going on in terms of looks, size, growth rate, cost. They do have periods of being moody but if you use tongs and keep your fingers away you should be fine.

My little dude is only 3 inches dls ... he is just grumpy 🤷🏻‍♀️😆.
Although my phormictopus sp blue, Dominican purple, & bayahibe are all shy, they hide or bolt. It's why my sp blue is called Dori, coz she likes to escapey 😂.

Mine’s a Dominican Purple and definitely not shy and has never used a hide.

Funny enough my Dominican purple hasn't used her hide either instead she chose to web up her foliage and block up her burrow so it can't be used . 20241122_050352.jpg
5am pic so not the best but you can see her in the top corner,( her favourite spot to sit,) and next to the grass n the web was her burrow entrance 😆 keep telling her she's ment to go in the burrow before she seals it but.... phormictopie 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣

Mine covered her first hide. New enclosure, covered the hide entrance again. Recently, she reopened the hide entrance, but I’ve never actually seen her in there. She also prefers to cling on the wall at the top corner again now after a couple months of being fully on the ground. I really think she hates moisture. I only put it down one corner to dampen the bottom layer. So dramatic.
