Well Out of 5 S. calceatum this bugger was number 4 in line to molt. The others molted fine but having been away from home the past few days I wasnt able to check up on this one.

So after a bit of exuvium removal, the damage was quite severe. When I discovered the sling, he only had these limbs free from the molt and it was clear that the hardening process had advanced to a point where simply removing the exuvia would be a simple fix.

After examing the spider a couple of the legs were already disconnected. After removing the skin, a few other legs were freed but they were bent in the most unusual directions and the spider was not using them. These legs were removed in hopes that upon the next molt, the healing process can begin.

The result. CUATRO!

I dont name my Ts but this one was deserving. Cuatro will be left to harden up and hopefully in the next few days he can pull through. Being that he only has legs on one side he may not be an 'ambiturner' (zoolander reference) BUT the thing is still perky considering what it just went through.

Good luck! Hopefully the lil one makes it for you!

(and I had to laugh, because I am watching Zoolander right now and opened this post only seconds after the "ambiturner" discussion lol)

What a little trooper! I hope he makes it and suspect he will if he made it past the first couple of days. Just cripple the crap out of his prey before throwing it in there.

Hehe, ambiturner...

Poor little guy....:(

He should make it, as S. cals are a pretty hardy tarantula. They are a baboon spider after all, and tenacious as hell!!! :p

She looks like she fared well, all things considered. Keep us posted and take lots of pics of her progress through molts. It's always interesting to see the limbs regenerate.

lol @ the zoolander reference.

Hey Guys,

So far the T is still responsive and "perky" for lack of better words. The good news is that the abdomen is still quite large so I think theres enough mass within to get the spider to its next molt. The molting process is going to be interesting if it gets to that point but all things considered, I like its chances.

I'll let you guys know if things go south!

I've always wondered about how a spider will handle a situation like this.

Will it try to regenerate all the legs at once, resulting in six small, weak legs? Will it only regenerate one or two at a time?

Definitely keep us posted; it's quite interesting to see, although I do feel bad for the spider. Hopefully it'll make it!

Well guys,

The conqueror was conquered.

I found th elittle guy on its back and either it tried to molt (seems early) or it "turtled" and was not able to right itself. In any case the little guy is no longer.

Joe, I too was interested to see how it would all pan out. I was interested to see how the legs would be regenerated and to what extent.

So sorry to hear, Eric. Sucks that you had to lose such a beautiful T.... :(

It definately would have been interesting to see the regeneration process.
