I thought I'd share a few pictures from a recent trip to Mexico. Ctenosaura are definitely impressive looking lizards. I'm not sure what species these are...maybe similis? If any of you know, please enlighten me. These pictures were taken at Tulum and other locales (including the pool at my hotel). Incidentally, spiny tailed iguanas are one of Florida's many exotic species. I'd be curious to know if any of the folks on the boards have had any local sightings.

Come on Floridians, I know you you've seen these lurking in your state.

Bust out your running shoes and some sturdy gloves. These guys can really move! If you manage to catch one they can be very defensive and are capable of biting hard.

I'm with you there :)

But if you're feeling brave it can be done. You just need to protect yourself. I've seen guys grab them bare-handed. That's crazy if you ask me.

i have read that the ones in mexico are more docile and easier to grab. the papers ive read about them hear say they are aggressive and fast. they say the babies can be bare handed but adults should be neted, snared, or trapped.

That's true. Many of the spiny tailed iguanas near resort areas get fed by people and won't flee if you get near them.

I know exactly where some are located: Amelia Earhart park in Hialeah,Fl you will see them on the rocks as you drive into the park
