I know this is weird but will crickets eat meat? Like I know they eat their own kind sometimes for some reason, and if they find a spider or scorpion that recently molted they will eat them too... But if you just give them a slab of raw pork will they eat it? Tbh just wondering

I think they will.
I figured as much. Don't think I will try it lol don't feel like leaving raw meat out for a few hours just for crickets. Plus I dont think it's too good for them since it has no vitamins like fruit or vegetables

Nvm I tried anyway lol. To be fair it's a hot dog slice and not like raw raw meat but I am sure if they eat that they would eat raw meat. Gonna remove it in a few hours to see. (Uncooked hot dog btw)

While raw meat might be an acceptable food supplement for crickets (albeit an unnecessary and potentially smelly one) I would not recommend a highly processed meat product like a hot dog. Many hot dogs use added nitrates/nitrites as preservatives - and they can have negative health effects, both on people and on other creatures. I don't know specifically what effect it would have on crickets - or on the other animals that end up eating the crickets, assuming they are feeder crickets and not just pet crickets - but why take the risk? If you want to give your crickets extra protein, you can just offer them cat or dog kibble - which has the added advantage of being a dry food so it doesn't rot or stink.

Tbh it was just a weird idea slash question in my head. They aren't eating it anyway just walking over it so I will take it out. They are feeder crickets

To be honest I didn't think about the preservatives. But that makes me wonder, the reason why I never purchased the orange cubes they sell pet stores for crickets is because it's full of preservatives. I bought it once and the crickets loved it but then red the ingredients and I realized it was terrible. Also expensive tbh. Just buy fruit. Sure they flock to this quickly but they eat fruit just fine just takes them a bit to notice it

Meat most certainly does have vitamins, but they differ from the ones in vegetables and fruits.

I think I got this from a cricket breeder online who suggested adding fish food to what you feed crickets. Apparently when they need protein they can turn to cannibalism to get it.

Crickets are omnivores with a somewhat rare few exceptions that are herbivores and/or detrivores.

Would cat food work? I don't have fish food anymore I sold my fish. I mean like pellets

Yes, they will eat dry cat or dog food. That's what I give my feeder crickets and roaches - along with assorted veggies and the occasional bit of fruit.

Around here I've seen then chowing down on earthworms after it rains. Is that typical or just some local species thing?

Should I leave it dry or get it wet?

I just leave it dry - that way it doesn't get moldy. They'll eat dry food readily. I also give them fresh veggies, which provides them with adequate moisture.

I imagine the worms you've seen them eating are the dead/dying ones that get stranded on sidewalks and driveways after the rain? They're omnivores and will eat pretty much anything. I've seen them eating all sorts of dead bugs in the wild - not just worms.
