I've been catching crawdads the past few days in a homemade trap, and eating them (mmmmmm...), and thought I'd share a few pics of a large specimen I caught tonight, that I think will become part of a tank full of local wildlife I'm planning (instead of dinner).

Bottom view, shows his size better:

When I was a kid I was walking around a lake "noodling" (reaching in the submerged holes and pulling out whatever was there~fish, crawlfish, whatever) and I pulled one out that was about 9" head to tail.I kept it in an aquarium with mosquitofish and tadpoles as food, and it grew to exactly 10 3/8". I kept it in alcohol for awhile then gave it to my science teacher as a specimen for biology class. They can get huge.

Yeah, they can get fairly big. This one is perhaps five or six inches long. Large for the tiny creek I got it in.

I'm not a southerner, I'm actually from the midwest. Missouri.

The tank I want to do is a wet/dry setup, with a collection of local wildlife, including crawdads, fishing spiders, perhaps frogs, small fish, various insects, plantlife.

I love these guys!! Always caught them around my neighborhood when I was younger (I still would if construction didn't tear down our crawfish spots). The ones we caught were bright red, and my friends and I would occasionally find blue claws scattered throughout the field. We always hunted for a blue crawfish...never found one though, just the severed claws.

I've seen pics of blue crawdads. The one I saw was from australia, where they're called "yabbies".

And these turn bright red once they're cooked:
