My grandparents live in Saint James, NY and they had a coyote running through the neighborhood. There are wooded areas a few blocks down and surrounding towns are close to state park, so I guess the coyote in NYC few years ago wasn't a rarity perhaps there is a small breeding population on LI. Officials say they are a nuisance but to be honest this area has so many more houses and people than 20 30 years ago when lots of area was farmland so the coyotes did belong here and kept other animals in check that now are over abundant. Aside from safety to animals I think we should encourage them, we have foxes and they are doing well.
