Should theoretically be okay - its an angiosperm\hardwood. I would still do oak before anything else though, even if you have to pay $10 to get it shipped from somewhere.

I have some oak and a costal live oak or shrub oak but there is so much cottonwood so I want to use this to save tons of money. I collected magnolia but I don’t want to use it anymore

Would cottonwood be safe for roaches. I used oak for my hissers but I want to use more leaves and I’m almost out of oak

I don't know anyone who uses it, and as I don't I can't vouch for its safety with roaches. Hissers actually do not need leaf litter, though it certainly won't hurt them. And I'm gonna keep recommending you stick to oak or maple, even if you have to buy it :)

I found an article on dendroboards saying to use it for frogs. The person mixed oak, bamboo, cottonwood, and magnolia

I guess it depends on if you are using it for, display or pragmatism. Roaches can be kept on kiln dried pine pellets if you are crazy enough. As long as they are kiln dried the oils are gone. They are ugly as all hell and I use them as cat litter, so I guess I'm just rambling now. Lots of people on here have killer design ability you can copy or take inspiration from. I can barely match clothing. I have to take artistic inspiration from here for the display enclosures. Hissers can be kept without substrate, but having something at the bottom to absorb the moisture from their massive turds won't hurt. Uncontrolled moisture is the enemy.

I have reptisoil and costal live oak and black oak and tons of egg flats. I read the babies like to burrow so I wanted more leaves

I meant for the roaches. The isopods are good on anything I give them so I’m not worried but I only have a pair of hissers that have not produced so I don’t want to try stuff to hurt them before I get at least one generation.
