How is this possible? They're not even the same genus. Are they fertile?

Yeah, it's possible, despite being different genus. I have heard that Elaphe, Lampropeltis, and Pituophis are supposedly closely related. There have been crosses of corn x gopher snake, corn x milksnake, king x gophers, etc. I'm not sure if they are even fertile for future breedings. That's not to say they can't act like it. ;)

It's not uncommon to find corn x rat crosses, and even crosses between ratsnake species in areas where their ranges overlap, as they are in the same genus. They'll even mate with snakes outside of their own genus. Elaphe are sluts. :)

I blieve they are fertile....the cross of king and corn being known as a Jungle Corn. Interesting looking animals, but I'm not a big fan of hybrids in general.
