Surprise surprise! I went to check on the other baby last night and out of no where this little guy appeared - he's got a much different look so I know its not another viper - Can anyone help me out and tell me what this guy is ? ? ? Somehow the previous owners had no idea he was in there. And are snakes of any species supposed to even be kept together? I'm ready to get another terrarium just for him so please lead me in the right direction. Thanks in advance, again.

It looks like some sort of garter snake. Corn snakes have a black and white checkered belly and black marks on the bottom jaw. Colubrids just are not my thing so hopefully someone can help you out more with an ID.

From what i've found so far it may possibly be a Fox snake or a Brown snake - both are native and common to my area so at least there is no legal repercussions with that little guy. . .

Ok - I'm leaning more towards Brown Snake.

Brown snake, why didn't I think of that, I've found a few here in NC growing up just been a long time since I've done any field herping. How are things going with the little guy(or girl)? Also how is that beautiful viper doing? Any new pics of them?

Actually most laws are against keeping native reptiles haha. I know in NJ at least it illegal to native :\ I wouldnt worry about anyone raising a red flag about it though even if it was.

From what I found so far it looks that both would be fine to keep in Wisconsin - I know the Fox snake is protected in MI making them illegal to keep there. As for the baby viper, I met up with an experienced keeper yesterday but had to have him come to my place to remove him since both snakes were kept in the same terrarium. He's in good hands now and I know he'll get the care he needs. Even though it was a critter I didn't know much about; just having him the few days I did I really grew attached so it was a little sad to see him go. But at least I got a surprise buddy that pretty much just started up my interest of snakes now. Before now I really never cared too much for them.
