This girl came out of my "black hisser" colony. She looks like a reverse stripe Tiger Hisser. Just thought Id share. Thought she was really pretty. :D
I put in a pic of a normal hisser to compare coloration.

Nice one. I love black hissers. But I think nobody will beat my "Chernobyl roach" :)

OMH... That thing is great!! How does it do shedding? Does it have issues? That is worth trying to see if it was genetic or just a fluke. I even like the name you dubbed it :D Im gunna go search my females see if I cant find a mutant roach to send you and get this trait going. That is a male isnt it?

Wow...that one sure is nice! Mind taking a photo up against a ruler for size?

Why are some roaches more rounded than others? I've noticed some females look thin, others, like the one in your photo...look rounded.

Ive noticed shape difference too. Some are just round and others long.. I guess just like some ppl are round and others long :D
This girl is a young one. She has a couple of molts yet to go. I should have taken her pic next to a tiger hisser...she has the exact opposite coloring...where her black is is where the tigers white is and her orange is where the tigers black is. Maybe Ill get a pic of her next to a tiger.. Aren't I speedy :D

Hi Darkraptor,

Is it possible that your "Chernobyl"roach is a gynander?
Don't know what the phenomenon is called in english: when an insect, through some sex-determination-errors has on one side a male anatomy and on the other side female?
I know it happens in Drosophila and in Phasmids, why not in roaches!
I need to read up on the genetical mechanism but now i'm to tired, maybe someone else can explain it to us? Maybe someone who knows more about genetics?

greets
Bernhard

Have you noticed any round males? All my males I would consider slender. If you seperate her from the colony and pair her up with a male of your choice for offspring things would get interesting.

She sure is pretty. Makes me think I should see to getting a few darker colored hissers into my group.

I do have a few males that have that rounded look to them. But mostly it seems to be females that are that way.
Im thinking of pairing her with a tiger hisser and see what happens.

I noticed this specimen after 2-3 molts. He had some "problems" during embrionic developement. Yes, it is a male, and is really horny ;)

I think no. I don't know correct english nomenclature, but as I mentioned this one had problem with correct sternites developement. I saw this kind of mutation in D. melanogaster. Sometimes some body parts can be doubled, like special mutation "bithorax" - when fruit fly has 4 wings (like Hymenoptera specie!) :D

And if we are talking about special hissers... I know one person who had totally(!) black roaches. I wasn't sure if it was G. portentosa, but were almost similar (except colour).

I've found this picture (taken 2-3 years ago). I had roach with almost the same pattern :D

Guys....stop with the pics already your making me want more hissers. Currently I only have the regular G. portentosa and I hope to add additional species some day. Some of my boys are huge approaching 4 1/4", I'll try to post pics on this thread later. A co-worker remarked that a male feeding on a banana was as large as a fruit.

I have some roaches pop up in my collection that are TOTALLY black as well. Ive isolated them in a cage by them selves...see what happens. They just seem to have normal babies so far.

i've heard diet can drastically effect coloration in some bugs

can't remember specifically what, though

In reference to the first pic, I used to get those when I had a colony, about 1 out of every 30 or so would be of that color morph. I believe the "round" individuals you are mentioning are just recently molted specimens, they will elongate over a period of a week or more as their fat bodies increase from feeding/drinking. Just take a "round" one out of the colony and give it plenty of food and water and you will see what I mean.

Are you sure you didn't mean 3 1/4"? I'd love to see a 4" hisser next to a ruler!
