I'm looking to start a hisser colony for my T. blondi. My room's getting cramped so I'd like to place the roaches in the kennel. I'm worried, however, is this summer season of the heat will melt away the Vaseline I plan to use to keep the from climbing out. And at that how often should I reapply the Vaseline? I will also keep a heat lamp over them with an adjustable knob, so I can fix the temperature since the outside temps tend to flucuate in my area.

I replace the vaseline every couple of months and never had a problem.
There is this liquid teflon stuff that can be purchased at blaberus.com

I've had no problems keeping my hissers contained with vaseline, even when the temps in my room hit 90. Even a very thin coat is enough to keep them from climbing.

I hear you can use packing tape (aka strapping tape) in place of Vaseline, I haven't tried it though.

The vaseline should be fine even if drippy for keeping the adults and good size nymph's in check because their weight works against them when on a slippery substance. It's the tiny nearly weightless babies that would likely be the ones who would be able to crawl over it and out. Even if a few escape, the winter kills them.

packing tape might work (the widest you can find). and as someone suggested there is a product called bugstop which I believe is the teflon type material.

Absolutely the best idea so far! We use the liquid teflon exclusively and there's nothing on Earth that would convince us to go back to messy vaseline or oils...
We get it from blaberus.com, too. ;) It's worth it's weight in gold! It successfully keeps in thousands upon thousands of roaches of different types.
We've discovered that the smallest nymphs can often walk right across the vaseline..lol

Fluon

vaseline is gross and how do you know you arent feeding a roach that just walked in it? It also loses its effectiveness at high temps it starts to run. the Teflon stuff can lose effectiveness in high humidityand rubs off over time it dries with a powdery feel to the touch.

Fluon was designed specifically for use with funnel traps used by entomologists out in the field. It works in both high heat and humidity it is also different than what james sells. it is not Bug Barricade or Bug Barrier.

The cheapest place I have found a product of similar characteristics is from Aaron Pauling. He sells 5oz for $20...which is cheap as you'll find it anywhere.
I have never managed to source his suppliar....but I haven't stopped looking. In the mean time, my success rate with vaseline has been 100%. My hissers can't seem to get past the stuff....or so I think lol :p
