Ok so this month I might get me a columbian tegu.

I have questions:

Do they give nasty bites?

What's the general tempement?

How long/heavy do these reptiles get?

Many folks feed theirs different stuff?

is there a strict diet they should be on?

what food gives them runny feces?

yes.. all large reptiles can deliver a nasty bite

their temperament isn't that bad .but they can be a little hostile at times but with proper handling they can be pretty calm and non aggressive.

they usually get about 3-3.5 ft and weigh about as much as a small dog

their omnivorous they eat pretty much anything they like, about a half /half veg and protein diet juvies will probably need more protein but and adult 50/50 is fine

as for runny fecal's , broccoli(also makes it smelly)canned dog food, strawberry's,citrus, raw turkey and chicken can as well but not often.any fruits. the sugars mess with their digestive tract and should only be given once a week and in small amount.

mine love strawberry's and boiled eggs but these should only be given as treats and in small portions. mine also like dandelion greens and the dandelion flowers

I'd steer clear of Columbian Tegu's and go for and Argentine Black and White instead. They're generally much more docile and handleable, and usually more attractive.

A great resource for Tegu's of all sorts:
TeguTalk.com, one of the biggest Gu breeders in the States runs it (Bobby Hill from Varnyard Herps)
