One of my walking sticks is changing color. The last segment of its abdomen is turning dark brown almost black. Is that a normal trait in walking sticks? BTW it was labled a Vietnamese walking stick at the petstore I bought it from. And my other one that is a molt smaller isn't changing color at all it is just a normal brown.

I think it is normal. Most phasmids change their colour depending on humidity, food, temperature, life stage ect.

I have about 25 Indian Walking Stick insects. When I got them as juveniles, they were all green. Now that they are adults, I have all sort of different colorations, even though they have all been kept in the same environment and fed the same thing. There are ones that are bright green, dull green, brown, dark brown (almost black), and all shades in between. So, yes, the color change is perfectly normal.

P.S. - be sure to collect the eggs that your stick lays when she's an adult, if you want to continue on with the animals next year.

If it is just dark on one end, it could have been injured. Sometimes they get stabbed by the thorns from the bramble. I always cut the thorns off before feeding it to them.
