My lecturers were kind today and I was able to go and collect my two new T's.

Loki, a Hapalopus sp. Colombia Large sling (the previous owner said it looks like it's in premoult):

Aki, a mature female Heterothele villosella:

I couldn't get a clear picture of her abdomen because I didn't want to disturb her by trying to get her to move around. She's quite a feisty eater; she snatches crickets up, wrestles with them a bit and then high-tails it to her hide.

I do believe the first one is a Hapalopus sp. Colombia Large. Nice pickups!

The breeder had them labelled as H. formosus, but now after reading the H. sp. Colombia/H. formosus discussions I'm not sure anymore. Is H. sp. Colombia Large the accepted name that is used for these, or is there a difference between the two?

Nice choice on the Hapalopus, I'd agree with it being 'large'. Never actually owned any Heterothele but my interests in dwarfs has increased a fair amount recently.... So much so I caved in and placed an order today, first one in 6 months been trying my hardest to avoid buying haha.

Cyriocosmus sellatus adult x1
Cyriocosmus elegans sling x1
Plesiopelma sp. 'Bolivia' slings x1
Theraposinae sp. 'Piura' slings x2

In the US and Canada, the correct name is Colombia Large. But in Germany they are labeled as Colombia Gross, or GroB.
I assume they are they still called Colombia Large outside of the US and Canada (except Germany)? For example, I live in South Africa, but I don't know the origins of the sling, so would I still call it H. sp Colombia Large?

That im not for sure on. Best thing to do, would be to call it one of the two until you find out what they are called in your area. I imagine that African keepers call them the same thing as German keepers, but i cant be certain. Im not up to date on anything outside of the US. Either way, you know what it is, and that it does have a few names, so you wont make the mistake of misidentifying it. Good luck with it! They are an awesome species. I have a couple females and a few juvies/slings. I produced a sac of 179 of these a while back. Very cool little Genus too.

Thanks for all your help, I'll keep an eye on what breeders are advertising them as here, until then I'll probably refer to it as the Colombia Large. I'm actually really glad that I decided to get one, from what I've read on the forums they're pretty awesome. At what stage can they generally be sexed at?

Your more than welcome. Im always happy to help when i can. That would be best to look into what they are calling it on your continent. They are very awesome! I was able to sex mine at around 1.5" and my female that produced all those babies was only about 2-2.25".

Mine is currently at about 2cm, which is around 0.8", so I reckon I have a bit to go before then :) What sort of signs do they show during pre-moult? The breeder I got this one from mentioned that his sometimes get a stripe on their legs, but I haven't found any information about that. On a side note, my H. villosella is randomly walking around her terrarium and sticking her head into the substrate so that just her legs and abdomen stick out. We've had a bit of a cold spell, so I put a heat mat underneath the terrarium to raise the temperature a bit, and she only seems to do this over the heat mat area. Is she doing it to get closer to the heat source?

Ive noticed that the best way to tell premolt is by the abdomen getting very plump, and extra webbing. Its hard to see their abdomen darkening because of the hairs on it. Cool on the villosella! It is more than likely getting used to the new home and going to start burrowing/webbing. The heat is probably just helping it become more active, and in turn it will start making itself at home.

I just recently got my H. villosella as a freebie its a very small sling brave little thing.
It never uses the hide when I'm looking inside the enclosure its always out.

I'm not sure on the growth speed though.

I got mine as a mature female, and she's pretty brave too. Runs like lighting and attacks crickets violently. Mine ran into the hide when I placed her in the terrarium, then ran out again and went exploring, and hasn't returned to the hide other than to drag a cricket in. Adorable sling, by the way. How did it fare with that cricket?

Thanks again, catfishrod.

I find the easiest way to notice premolt in the Hapalopus sp. 'Columbia'large is the colouration in the legs will go from a vibrant orange to a rusty orange/brown colour.

Thank you, mine seems to have darkish brown legs at the moment, but I don't know what it usually looks like, so I can't compare. Hopefully it is in premoult and is going to come out bright and beautiful soon.

I love looking at her, although she tends to stay hidden away most of the time, so I just stare at her when she comes out!
