Hi all

I was just pruning some plants and removed what I thought was a bit of old spiderweb and instead found it was a cocoon. So now I have this chrysalis of some sort. I can't put it back on the plant because it has no way of hanging there and I don't want to just dump it on the soil because it'll get eaten, so I was wondering if I can look after it until the butterfly (I assume) emerges. Anyone got any tips? Should I keep it moist/dry and what sort of temps?

I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up dying now I've disturbed it but I'd like to give it a good chance if I can.

thanks

if you have an unused KK or plastic container you cant use that.

1st) if its a container it needs holes i suggest heating up a small and i mean like 1/8 or you can use a drill bit. ( if you have a KK move to step 2) and putting many holes in the surrounding area,
2nd) get some double sided tape and stick it to the top of the KK where the hinged lid/door is on the KK.[but remember not to open it once your Chrysalis is inside.](or plastic container) [special note: make sure its taller with a width at least bigger than your fist if your using the plastic container. and about 6in+ because its going to need to spread and dry its wings.] if your doing it with a plastic container than put the double sided tape on the lid.
3rd) put the top of the chrysalis against the tape and be sure to put pieces of paper on the rest of the DST (double sided tape) so when it does arrise from its cocoon, its fresh wings or legs wont get stuck the the double sided tape.
4th) close the lid to either the KK/plastic container what ever your using and watch it and gradually you'll see it start to emerge.

If i was helpful your welcome:D, if not im sorry i couldnt help :eek:

another thing i forgot to mention in there was;
is it still atatched to the leaf ?
if so you could just use the double sided tape on the leaf instead of the chrysalis to the lid of the KK/ plastic container.

If the cocoon/pupae still has the "stem" on the top of it, you can tie a piece of thread to it and then tape or tie the string to the top of the new container or the original plant. I've done it with butterflies quite a few times. Plus, then the emerging insect has plenty of room to do its thing since it is further from the top of the container.
