hello there,

I am wondering if there is a way to make the crickets stop singing WITHOUT killing them.

I ask because I live in a small apartment and we can hear them loud enough already even when they are put in the bathroom with the door closed. It's really annoying!

Perhaps killing one after another until I squish the Meastro! :mask:

The wings make the noise so you could rip those off. I think there might be crickets that don't chirp, but I'm not sure. I would suggest roaches, but your in Canada.

Would there be another option? I have about 100 of those things.

I've had this problem before, the noise drove me crazy... I just fed any of the winged (chirpy) males to my tarantulas first. It's not an immediate solution I know but it works. I tend to use smaller crickets now 2/3 at a time as they don't have wings to chirp with. See if someone you know will trade them for smaller ones or another type of feeder maybe mealworms?

Either try to reduce the winged male population like suggested or maybe try to build a soundproof/sound reducing box for the ccricket tank haha although I'm not sure exactly how you'd work that out

I guess from years of sleeping outside or with windows open, the chirping doesn't bother me. Actually has the tendency to lull me to sleep. Dead silence in a closed up house is stifling...
As someone else suggested, buy younger crickets. Or, just enough to feed out at one time.

G. assimilis if you can find and buy them in your country. They are a lot less noisy than acheta.

Or you can keep only the females :p

If you're set on raising crickets, over time you can keep looking in the container to find a mutation that keeps them quiet. I have a batch of quiet ones going right now. The genetic mutation causes them to have short back legs and short forewings. The males can't make noise with the shorter forewings. Well they can but it only sounds something like a very light scratching on a paper bag, you can't hear it very well at all. They breed also but not as well(not as many) as the normal ones. It takes some time but all you need is a pair to get started. They aren't unique at my house, I've read other people have seen them in their cricket containers also.

Male crickets will chirp at each other in territorial disputes, I can't stand the chirping either so I feed off all the males I get right away.

I started separating them. I have put a few in a zip Lock bag for the night. A few more in a container. And the rest in the bigger container where I actually keep them. And every once a while, with a flash light, trying to spot the one that chirps. I would take that it out to either feed it to my tarantulas OR just throw it from the 3rd floor! So far, 2 were fed and 2 went on flying outside my window. There is still a few more that needs to be taken care of (in due time!)

Instead of wasting them you should just cut off the wings.
