Looking for some tips that may contrast other genera and species more commonly seen in the hobby.

Interested in the Charon genus in general, but will be starting with Charon ambreae as it is native here and I can find CB every so often.

I cant however find much of any info on them outside of wild specimens.

Has anyone kept them, breed them, have notes on specifics that may be different from more commo. species kept as pets?

Cheers for any input.

While I haven’t kept ambreae, I do have a few notes for Charon grayi that could be helpful.

Climate needs seem fairly standard, except I’d recommend slightly higher ventilation than average, as I’ve known others to run into issues with more stuffy enclosures. That being said, I do still provide quite a bit of moisture and ensure the substrate remains damp.

For feeding grayi has been absolutely ravenous for me, not so much as Acanthophrynus but certainly more than your average Amblypygid, and this has been echoed by my fellow keepers. Ensuring plenty of space for rapid molts might be wise.

Finally behavior wise these seem fairly active, and are more inclined to actually wander and hunt than some of my more stationary sit and wait amblypygi. Remember they climb smooth surfaces, and this species will JUMP like nobody’s business, comparable to Avicularia IMO. I’d take utmost caution in working with them because they’ll dart away quite easily.

Cheers for your thoughts and experiences :)

Being relatively new to this group, and completely new to this genus I appreciate it.

Do you see any issues with punched stainless for vents? that is my standard for tarantulas and other vivariums.

Do you feel a water dish is acceptable, or is misting the glass usually required?

Thanks again :)

I’m not familiar with punched stainless ventilation, so I can’t really advise on that.

I don’t usually use water dishes, but I’ve known others to use them with success so it’s likely fine. As long as you also maintain moisture to the substrate it shouldn’t make a difference.
