No, I wasn't almost attacked by a rattlesnake, but by a black racer pretending to be a rattlesnake!!!

I was outside yesterday hollering for my bad Jack Russell terrier--who'd dug a hole under the shed and was hanging out there--when I noticed that right by my feet, at the bottom of the stairs of our deck was a black snake, about 2 feet long! I tried to get a closer look but she wagged her tail at me and made like she was going to strike, rattlesnake-style! So I yelled "Oh shucks" (heh heh ;)) and jumped back on the stairs and she was gone that fast.

I love snakes and am glad we have them in our yard. We've seen Eastern Indigo snakes, oak snakes (patterned similar to rattlers but no rattles), garters and the black racers. Love 'em all!

Racers and Coachwhips can be so funny with their bluffs; unfortunately that behavior is partially behind all those horror stories about snakes "chasing" people. People who are scared of snakes assume that the snake is wantonly attacking them for no reason other than being "mean".
"Oak Snakes", btw, are what Floridians call Gray Rat Snakes, just like they call Corns "Red Rats", go figure. Y'all got some odd names for snakes, lol.
