Read a google patent about this and decided to try it myself.
Rice husk charcoal is cheap, safe to use and less vulnerable to mite infestation than cocopeat.

Which is the purpose of the lateral opening with the mesh in the nest?

In past times i did breed feeder crickets ( in a micro scale ) for to feed my animals. In these times i used coco fiber as sustrate for the nest and a metallic mesh for to stop the digging behaviour.

Very good idea. Charcoal being able to trap and contain all sorts of nasty chemicals and many micro-organisms.

It's not an opening, I just attached it so crickets could climb more easily xP

Gryllus bimaculatus, it's the only feeder cricket species legally allowed in Korea.
