Is there a general rule of thumb when it comes to housing centipedes (double its size should be the tank length, for example)?

Usually the "rule of thumb" is the enclosure should be at least as wide as the animal is long and 2xs as long as the centipede's total body length. Although, if you keep your pede well-fed, they won't use as much enclosure space. For your own safety (and the pede's if it were to try and escape), height is a bit of importance- enclosure should be at least as tall, if not taller, than the centipede's total body length- consider that when you put substrate in, as doing so would only give the centipede less height to overcome in order to escape.
