So a friend of mine needed to place a few of his babies, and I finally was able to get myself a really cool, captive-bred, feeding-on-mice side-winder.
This is the Colorado Desert variety.

Its a really cool snake, and I love the horns- kinda reminds me of my pacman frogs.

Ive always wanted a side-winder.
The best part is that it wasnt taken from the wild, and readily feeds on mice, and it was free.

The Colorado Desert isn't actually in Colorado...

Nice snake BTW. I come across those quite frequently in the desert out here in San Diego County.

He just took a mouse today.
I thought he might give me trouble, so I turned the lights off and left the room.
Wasnt gone for more than 8 minutes, and when I came back the mouse was gone . . .

Hes nice and fat and happy now, and so am I.

I love animals with horns above their eyes, maybe thats where my love of pacman frogs comes from.

sweet snake! the ones I find at the SA hot show seldom are guaranteed to be switched from lizards so I have yet to get one. I suppose I could force feed but I still think the best way not to get bit is by keeping my fingers away from their mouths lol

winders are typically not hard to get onto mice but you do get the occasional stubborn snake. i had one that wouldn't eat for anything and i finally had to force feed it a pinky and it took mice after that with no hesitation. infact, i have a laterorepens that is doing this right now. i hope i dont have to go as far as to force feed. we will see.

When I got my albino C. atrox he wouldn't take mice either, I went to the local reptile store and collected lizard poo outta their tanks and put it in a deli cup with the mouse. The mouse would get the sent of the lizard on him and my snake would eat every time. It took like 3 times of doing this and he has eaten ever since with no problem.
Much better than trying to force feed a rattler.

C. cerastes and the variants are some of my favorite rattlers. I guess an added plus is that the bite isn't as potent either, haha. However, a buddy of mine got tagged with one fang on his hand, he permanently lost feeling to his thumb and pointer finger, but didn't get any necrosis or anything.

be careful with winders as they will not kill you, but the venom is very localized and causes a lot of damage. there is a GOOD chance you would have a severely crippled hand if you got a good bite to it..... even lose digits and such.

I havent even seen or heard the side-winder rattling yet, not once.
Hasnt struck at me either . . .

I seen some bite/treatment pics from a place called Advanced Venom Research, and i will say that Id rather be bitten by this side-winder than my Northern Pacific . . .

I really dont plan on ever finding out for myself, and do not put myself into a situation where I might . . .
