Caught a salamander, ID?

So I'm up at my parent's place in Lexington, MA and I was turning over rocks looking for interesting bugs, and I found this little guy. Almost thought it was a worm until I noticed its little legs.

He's about 5 inches long, head to tail. Any ideas on species? I'd love to bring it back with me, but I think I'm just gonna set him free tomorrow.

It's most likely Plethodon spp. My guess P. cinereus (Redback Salamander).

They don't occur in NJ, which is where I assume it was caught.

I place my vote with the others for lead back phase Plethodon cinereus.

He said it was caught at his parent's house in MA.

I used to live in Kearny and we used to catch tons of them out in the meadows all the time . Pretty cool little salamanders .

WHOOPS! :wall: I need to start reading text in ID threads lol. Either way it's still a Plethodon cinereus. Hemidactylium scutatum occurs in the midwest.
