So I ended up with a large pile of socks on the chair, the clean and dirty ones all mixed together. Gee thanks, dear. Now I have to wash 20 pairs of socks.
She comes in, carrying the cat. She sits in the chair, pets the cat for a moment then holds a sock in it's face. It turns it's face away. "Dirty." Next sock, the cat draws it's head back in alarm. Next, no reaction. The pile is sorted in less than a minute.

Could someone else try this and tell me if we have finally found a practical use for a cat?

You should get a Nobel or at least a mention in the Guiness Book of Records. First Human To Discover Practical Use for Cat.

I thought you were already using your cat to mess with the local ecosystem.

My old lady cat actually loves foul footwear. She used to rub her face in and sleep on my sister's ranch boots.

Now PETA is going to come to your house, take your cat and kill it to save it. The cat may agree it's best too.

So we have two varieties of cat. The ones that get all excited and aroused upon discovering undergarments that are stuck to the floor and professional sniffer cats suffering severe abuse as socks are waved under their nose.

Life be full of wittle surprises. One thing that strongly denotes Thai culture: cleanliness. They are fanatical about being clean and are easily offended by odors. Well, the boss is this house has just taken cat sniffing one step farther. Realizing she is on to something she calmed the cat into detection mode. She then went through all the clothes in the house. The cat senses are far more acute than I have ever thought to credit them with. Like a highly trained sniffer dog it detected mold and mildew, a major ongoing nightmare in this locale, and things that have just become musty from sitting in poorly ventilated closets and drawers. The results have been nothing short of amazing.
While just a guess, I'd propose a theory that an awful lot of cats possess this ability and it could easily be applied to keeping one's home much more sanitary. This could also prove to be quite valuable to people who keep animals in controlled artificial environments as terrariums. Detecting a high mold and mildew condition and detecting plant and furnishing contamination. This potentially could even extend to detecting excessive hazardous bacteria counts. (Gram negatives especially.)

To give one example, we have a problem fungi prevalent here. It appears as a white powder commonly growing on wood. This fungi is a very close relative to a fungi that is a dangerous opportunity infector in humans, contributing to various forms of pneumonia. The cat has easily detected the stuff, both the 'bloom/fruit and dormant in a couple of wood cabinets, repelled and even sneezing when I introduced it to the surfaces.

My wiener dog detects all kinds of excreta and rolls in them, you better be jealous.
