Hey,
I had a buddy tell me that he caught Bull Frog's w/ a gummi worm attached to a fishing line, when he was a kid. It sounded like a load of bull to me, but I know nothing about how a frog detects prey. I was wondering if someone out there knows a little about this subject, and if they can provide any scientific backup. Like I said, it sounds like someone is blowing smoke somewhere.
Thanks in advance!!!!
Jon

i have caught numerous bullfrogs on fishing gear.

on:
nightcrawlers
plastic worms
powerbait
jigs
spinners
crankbaits
and chicken livers.

bullfrogs will eat almost anything.

If it is drug past them, they will bite it. I've caught hundreds of bullfrogs on fishing tackle.

A few people catch wild bullfrogs for frog jumping contests, then when it's over they release them back, that's one reason I know they would try to catch some.

Derekool:

i was using small ones as extra feeders for my gophersnakes and my savanah monitor.

oh and the ones up to 5" for fishing bait.

i have kept the bigger ones as pets too, they love mice.

I just happen to have a baby bullfrog that I raised from a tad. In the last week or so, his tail has disappeared almost completely... a little 1/4 inch nub, but he's still not showing any interest in food.
I put a couple of 4 week old guppies in the water part of his enclosure... about 1/2 inch or so... and I put a live black worm right in front of him (the tiny ones I feed to my spoiled fishy kids). I was told to offer him some crickets, too.

Should I be worried that he's not eating anything? Or is he still absorbing his tail and not really in need of food yet?

...sorry for hijacking :)

So many people seem to have trouble getting the froglets to start eating, and I dont know why since bullfrogs are known for their voracious appetite. Keep trying, usually they will eat when the stub is gone. You can try crickets, waxworms, guppies, and small earthworms.

i raised mine from a tad, and only had feeding issues once it became a fully formed frog. after a week of not eating it started on crickets and never gave me any feeding problems after that. theyre awsome creatures :D
ive been able to catch these on many fish lures, they will eat anything they can fit in their mouths.

 What a beautiful frogger!! :D

My little guy/gal ate some fruitflies the other day... finally! I had some flightless ones out for feeding my slings and offered him a couple. He lunged and gobbled up the things so fast, I gave him a few more.
I'm so excited that he ate something!!

I do have guppy babies in the water part of his tank, and I've tried crickets in varying sizes... nothing yet. I guess he likes the "little" prey for now.

Thanks for the info... and sorry for hijacking the thread

That's great to hear! All frogs need to learn how to hunt, so it makes sense he starts small, and will eventually increase taking larger prey. They practice finding the right position, and lunging, all which are techniques of hunting prey.
